The 2018 Emmy’s have come and gone. The Fonz finally got his trophy, Game of Thrones is still doing Game of Thrones things and the talk of the town, other than the awards, was about who owned the red carpet best. Luckily enough, Baxter of California was the go to grooming line for more than one or two stars. Since the chatter after the Emmy’s, Oscar’s, and Grammy’s is always around “how to get the look” we were able to get with Stranger Things Joe Keery and Queer Eye new comer, Antoni Porowski, to learn how you too can achieve that Emmy’s look – mullets and all.

JOE KEERY styled by Matthew Collins

If you have been riding the Stranger Things cult vibe these last few years, then you know Steve Harrington is a hair god. As we said before, he is a prime example of the mullet making a comeback in a GREAT way. Actor Joe Keery has no problems rocking the mullet outside of work, and when he showed up to the Emmy’s the internet lost their shit, literally. If you have what it takes, follow stylist Matthew Collins step by step guide to getting Joe Keery’s hair (and skin for good measure):

For your skin:

  1. To prep skin, wash and exfoliate and then pat gently with a towel to leave skin slightly damp. Use Herbal Mint Toner to balance skin and prep for moisturizer.
  2. Apply Under Eye Complex from under eye to the outer.
  3. Apply dots of the Oil Free Moisturizer at various spots on face. Lightly press on still-damp skin, pressing the palms toward the outside of the face for a light facial massage to stimulate the skin.

For the hair:

  1. Start by applying Clay Effect Style Spray into wet hair as you blow dry to create shape
  2. Use the Grooming Cream and the Hard Cream Pomade to give separation and hold to hair.
  3. Start with a dime-sized amount of the award-winning Clay Pomade, and warmed it between her palms to make sure it is emulsified
  4. Starting at the back of the head, coat the hair with Clay Pomade. If you need more product, repeat.

ANTONI POROWSKI styled by Danni Katz

Known as the “Food Guy” or “John Mayer’s twin” on the new Netflix revival show, Queer Eye, Antoni is getting as much love for his looks as he normally does for his taste in wine and food. He is a prime example of guys starting to move away from the tight fades and controlled looks, for a more natural “I was just at the beach all day” look. Celebrity stylist Danni Katz gave us all the details you need to recreate this stylish look.

For your skin:

  1. To prep skin, wash and exfoliate and then pat gently with a towel to leave skin slightly damp.
  2. Apply Under Eye Complex from under eye to the outer.
  3. Apply dots of the SPF 15 Oil Free Moisturizer at various spots on face. Lightly press on still-damp skin, pressing the palms toward the outside of the face for a light facial massage to stimulate the skin.
  4. Finish off by applying the Hydro SalveTM Lip Balm.

For your hair:

  1. Start by applying Clay Pomade and Hard Water Pomade into wet hair as you blow dry. For both of these products, do not make the mistake of using too much, too soon. Start with a little product and build as you go for desired look.
  2. Finish the look with the Clay Effect Style Spray, which will add both texture and volume, while proving a hold that will last all day.

Why Get Pasted: The Barber Perspective

Baxter of California is proud to present our new Paste Pomade, and it might be our finest pomade yet. If our Hard Cream Pomade and Clay Pomade had a baby (and we’re not 100% sure they didn’t), the new Paste Pomade would be the lovable, versatile result. The Paste Pomade combines the strong hold of our Clay Pomade with the maneuverability of our Hard Cream…the result is pomade that offers a workable, hard hold with a solid, semi-matte finish.

We take pride in our network of Baxter of California educators. These barbers are some of the finest in the business and they really know their pomades. We knew if we wanted some honest feedback on our product, the best way to get it would be to have it field tested in the trenches by the best.

Professional barbers Whitney VerMeer and Michael Mejia weighed in on the new Paste Pomade. Among their thoughts:

Easy Learning Curve, Good User Experience

This is something we really wanted to go for. The pomade user comes in all shapes and styles and we wanted to craft a product that was easy to use and afforded a certain amount of flexibility to the wearer.

The firm hold of this pomade is strong enough to style and set, yet maneuverable enough to appeal to a wide variety of users. The semi-matte finish offers a healthy sheen that is somewhere between the vibrant shine of our Hard Water Pomade and the most natural finish of our cream pomades.

Great for Curly Hair

The Paste Pomade helps relax the natural curl of the hair and leaves a light, natural looking shine. This pomade is ideal for individuals who like the firm hold of our Clay pomade but are looking for a little more versatility for their texture.  At the same time, this product allows for greater maneuverability and volume control than our firmer hold pomade.

No Need for Cocktailing

Many pomade users like to mix and match their products to achieve the right amount of shine and hold. We set out to create a product that offered the best of both worlds. Our users want the ability to set a style they like, while also having the freedom to make adjustments with a semi-matte finish.

While this product works well on its own and we’re confident that you won’t need to cocktail, we found some of our barbers still liked the cocktailing experience and suggested using Paste Pomade for the styling and shine, drying, then applying our Clay Pomade to achieve maximum hold.

Bottom Line

The Paste Pomade is a true 2-in-1 product that offers the hold of a firmer pomade combined with the styling freedom of a softer cream. Thanks in no small part to the valuable feedback provided by our Baxter Finley barbers and Baxter of California educators, this pomade will appeal to a variety of wearers. From the most hardcore pomade users to the novice, this product has style, ease, and versatility that is sure to please. We’re confident our Paste Pomade will make a great addition to your grooming collection.

So get pasted!

WTF Baxter: The Men On Screen

In August, we debuted a video series to help men tackle the hard f*cking questions—the ones some of us didn’t even know we needed aswered. In order to get the message across, we enlisted the help of 4 wildly hilarious #Baxtermen, including comedian Justin Martindale, actor Jay Ali, comedian Karl Hess, and actor Tobias Jelinek. We’ll continue to release their videos—each targeting a unique men’s grooming topic—every Wednesday, so make sure you keep checking  in for more laughs. And just so you know a little bit about the men dropping all this knowledge, we sat down with each of them and asked them a few questions of our own.

Justin Martindale: An LA-based comedian originally from San Antonio, TX who has been seen as a guest on E!’s “Live From E!” as well as the series “Worst Thing I Ever…” If you live in or visit LA, you can catch Justin’s live performance at The Comedy Store & Laugh Factory.

Baxter: But for real, Justin, deodorant or antiperspirant?

Justin: Clear deodorant 1000%.

Baxter: Have you ever…dated someone with better hair than you?

Justin: There’s no such thing.

Baxter: Brush, comb, or just the man claw?

Justin: Man Claw like God intended.

Baxter: Do you freak out if someone else touches your hair?

Justin: Depends on who the person is. Nope I take it back… Yes I care. Trust no one.

Baxter: Just for sh*ts n giggles: boxers or briefs?

Justin: Boxer briefs.

Jay Ali: A UK-born actor best known for his portrayal of Vaughan Daldry on Bloomers. He also portrays Mr. Timothy in the ABC Family series, “The Fosters.”

Jay Ali

Baxter: But for real, deodorant or antiperspirant?

Jay: Deodorant.

Baxter: Have you ever…dated someone with better hair than you?

Jay: No!!!  Have you seen my hair? It’s amazing.

Baxter: Brush, comb, or just the man claw?

Jay: I find a good tug of the hair by anyone’s hand does a good job.

Baxter: Do you freak out if someone else touches your hair?

Jay: Depends if it’s done in a loving way or a “Tell me where the money is” way.

Baxter: Just for sh*ts n giggles: boxers or briefs?

Jay: I’m a big fan of boxer brief thongs.

Karl Hess: A stand-up comedian, writer, host and actor who lives in Los Angeles. He is the only person ever to do all of those things. He also enjoys tacos and leisure.

Karl Hess

Baxter: But for real, deodorant or antiperspirant?

Karl: Deodorant.

Baxter: Have you ever…dated someone with better hair than you?

Karl: Once.  It was a nightmare and frankly I’d rather not speak about it.

Baxter: Brush, comb, or just the man claw?

Karl: Man claw all day. Maybe a comb if it’s something important like a wedding or court appearance.

Baxter: Do you freak out if someone else touches your hair?

Karl: No, I don’t freak out. I get even.

Baxter: Just for sh*ts n giggles: boxers or briefs?

Karl: Boxer briefs—best of both worlds. Just enough support, but not over-bearing.

Tobias Jelinek: An American actor raised in Santa Barbara, California. Tobias’ landed his first film role at the age of 15 as Jay in Disney’s classic Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker. You might also recognize Tobias in his recent role as a Lead Agent in the Netflix Original Series “Stranger Things.”

Tobias Jelinek

Baxter: But for real, Tobias, deodorant or antiperspirant?

Tobias: I ain’t afraid of a little sweat. Leave aluminum for the foil.

Baxter: Have you ever…dated someone with better hair than you?

Tobias: That’s possible.  There was that one. But it’s complicated. Next question..

Baxter: Brush, comb, or just the man claw?

Tobias: Man claw.

Baxter: Do you freak out if someone else touches your hair?

Tobias: I don’t know. You wanna try?

Baxter: Just for sh*ts n giggles: boxers or briefs?

Tobias: I like to be held tightly.

Shaving Safety Tips

Shaving shouldn’t be a chore. We listened to you and are tackling your shaving concerns. Read on for our first few tips when it comes to shaving. Follow #TheRealShave on social @baxterofca for more tips and tricks .

Realshave - 2

TIP 1: SHAVE SLOWLY. We’ve all heard that slow and steady wins the face, and shaving is no different. If you want to avoid having to add bandages to your accessory list, we recommend you slide the razor slowly and gently along the contours of your face. Baxter of California can help you achieve the most comfortable shave every time with three essentials. Prep face with Shave Tonic and then apply Super Close Shave Formula for a smooth shave that leaves skin hydrated. Finish up your shave with our cooling & calming After Shave Balm for less irritation.

Realshave - 3

TIP 2: SHAVE, EVEN IF YOU CAN’T GROW A FULL BEARD. Struggling to grow a full beard? Nothing looks less attractive than patches of beard, so please shave – it’s for your own good! Just accept it, not everyone is as lucky as Chuck Norris in the beard department. The perfect shave starts with the right product. Use Baxter of California’s Super Close Shave Formula for an easy glide and the perfect cushion between your face and the razor.

Realshave - 4

TIP 3:  USE AN AFTERSHAVE. We’ve all seen the kid in the movie that slaps the aftershave on his face and starts screaming – who needs that, right? The good thing is that a lot has changed since the 90’s! Harsh chemicals have been removed from aftershave and they have been replaced with nature-based botanicals and humectants that soothe and hydrate the skin, like Baxter of California’s After Shave Balm.

Grooming Low Down with Celebrity Stylist Marissa Machado

We caught up with celebrity groomer Marissa Machado (@mnmachado)  to talk shop on her latest red carpet styling escapades. From Michael Keaton to Nick Jonas, Marissa knows what it takes to make men look their best, starting with Baxter of California.

Q: What are your favorite products in the Baxter of California line?

A: I love the Oil Free Moisturizer. It melts into skin and doesn’t leave a heavy feel or shine. I am also a big fan of the Soft Water Pomade. I love the shine it gives while also a flexible hold. For the perfect scruff I love using the Beard Comb. I am able to get a nice close-to-the-skin trim.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 3.06.09 PM

Q: What grooming tricks do you always use when getting your clients ready for parties or the red carpet?

A: The most important thing for me while getting any of my clients ready for the carpet or any event is to keep them looking masculine. I never want anyone to look at my work and think ‘great makeup’ or that they even have a groomer. It’s not about me. It’s about keeping the integrity of a man. I want them to look like the best version of themselves. Like a true gentleman.

Q: Damn, we love that. For the recent Oscars and events around it, how did you choose Nick Jonas’ look or Michael Keaton’s?

A: Usually an event like the Oscars is just about elevating the everyday look to movie star status. This year my men had a very true-to-themselves look. Nothing too fussy. Again, the best version of themselves.

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 3.05.58 PM

Q: Any other red carpet tips to share?

A: When getting a man ready for the red carpet I take in the time of day for lighting as well as the time of year for temperature. Weather plays a huge part in a face as well as hair. It’s about knowing your client and what is going to work as well as last the day or night.

Q: Why do you love using Baxter of California?

A: I love Baxter of California because there are few lines geared toward men.  I love clean packaging and a masculine look in my set up and I am able to achieve that with Baxter.

You can follow more of Marissa’s red carpet styling on Instagram. And for more behind the scenes looks at grooming, follow us at @baxterofca.

2x Grammy Winner! Diplo 2016

Diplo had the winning look at the Grammy’s this week, styled by celebrity groomer Garret Gervais (@gtgervais) using Baxter of California products. We got the dirt from Garret on some Grammy grooming.

Baxter: How did you choose Diplo’s look for the Grammy’s?

Garret: I knew he was wearing a great, modern suit so I decided to go for an equally dapper, yet deconstructed, hairstyle.

Baxter: Diplo seems like a really funny guy. Any insider jokes you can share with us?

Garret: He’s really fun and funny. Proof of this is on his snapchat (@diplo) where you can “Diplo Cam” footage of him with dog face filters while I’m trimming his edges and ears.

Baxter: Any red carpet grooming tricks?

Garret: He doesn’t shave his full face, so after shaving his jawline, we treated the skin with After Shave Balm, Oil Free Moisturizer, Under Eye Complex and Hydro Salve Lip Balm. I blotted away any excess with blotting papers and applied a light dusting of powder for the red carpet. I blow-dried his hair with Grooming Lotion and used Clay Pomade and Cream Pomade to finish the look.

Baxter: Any insider tips on how you made sure Diplo kept that look for a full day and night of activities?

Garret: Dry shampoo! It was a long day, starting with dress rehearsals at 11am and going through about 9pm. I started his hair with a base of dry shampoo to give it fullness and keep it looking fresh.

Baxter: Why do you love Baxter of California?

Garret: I love Baxter products because they’re all simple, yet incredibly effective.
